Brushing your teeth in the morning and evening is for most everyday rituals. But more is needed for healthy teeth - the vibrating technology, for example.
Indispensable interdental brush: Regular cleaning of the interdental spaces is very important - this is where germs collect.
Everyone has already experienced it: after eating, debris hangs between the teeth. Then there is not always the opportunity to brush your teeth. "This is not absolutely necessary either," says dentist Joachim Hüttmann.
Two times a day, however, it is essential to use a brush: in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before going to bed. With more time to be planned in the evening. Because then it is important to remove harmful bacteria that have accumulated on and between the teeth throughout the day.
Be careful with hard brushes
There are soft, medium-hard and hard toothbrushes for daily scrubbing. Which one is right varies from person to person. You should be careful with hard brushes, says Dirk Kropp, managing director of the ProDente initiative in Cologne. They can also damage people with sensitive teeth and gums.
With soft brushes, the bristles wear out faster, which is why they have to be replaced more often. "Patients should ask their dentist which brush is ideal for them," explains Prof. Dietmar Oesterreich, Vice President of the German Dental Association (BZÄK) in Berlin. An electric toothbrush can also be advantageous because it facilitates effective cleaning.
A separate brush for the gaps
According to Austria, it is particularly important to clean the spaces between the teeth thoroughly. Because it is precisely there that many pathogenic germs settle. To remove them, you can use an interdental brush in addition to the regular toothbrush. “This cleans more thoroughly than dental floss when there are open spaces between the teeth,” says Austria.
Interdental brushes come in different sizes. Again, patients should ask their dentist for advice. This also applies to the question of the right technology. The general rule is: "There is no one technology that is optimal for everyone," says Kropp. It is important that you take time for each individual tooth and clean all surfaces.
From red to white and with a system
Hüttmann favors the so-called vibrating technique. Tooth brushers put the brush on the gum line at a 45-degree angle and shake it gently. "This also loosens the plaque on the gum line," explains Hüttmann, a member of the Schleswig-Holstein State Board of the Free Association of German Dentists (FVDZ). With gentle pressure, the brush moves from the gums towards the teeth, i.e. from red to white.
A systematic approach is particularly important, regardless of the technology. “The best thing is like doing your homework: first the difficult spots, that is the inside in the lower jaw and the outside in the upper jaw. Finally, the chewing areas, »says Hüttmann.
Empty promises on mouthwashes
And what about mouthwashes? A distinction must be made between medical mouthwashes and mouthwashes. Mouthwashes lure on the packaging with the help of gum disease or caries prevention. "However, these effects have not been scientifically proven," says Austria.
The medical mouthwash solutions are different. These are mostly pharmacy-only drugs. "They contain an active ingredient that reduces bacteria," explains Austria. They are used, for example, as part of periodontitis treatment or after an operation. "Medical mouthwash solutions are not suitable for long-term use," says Austria.
Brush your teeth twice a day, use fluoride toothpaste, clean the gaps and remove bacteria on the base of the tongue - whoever does this, does a lot to keep the teeth healthy. The check-up at the dentist is not spared. (sb / dpa / tmn)
