Effervescent tablets can be a health hazard if you have high blood pressure

Doctors warn against consuming effervescent tablets if high blood pressure is known. Because the effervescent tablets usually contain a lot of sodium. Ingestion can be dangerous if consumption increases. Instead, those affected should take medication in a different form, for example.

It depends on the amount

According to scientists, the question of how much salt is actually healthy must be answered individually. High salt consumption increases the risk of high blood pressure, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke, but salt is also a vital mineral for the body.

High-pressure patients should refrain from consuming salt

But: "High-pressure patients can have a positive impact on their risk of cardiovascular diseases if they are reluctant to eat salt," the German Society for Endocrinology reported in a recent statement. Professor Helmut Schatz from the company's board of directors explained: “The sodium contained in table salt binds water and thus increases the blood volume. The pressure in the vessels becomes higher and with it the blood pressure, so a simplified explanation of a complex process ”.

High sodium content in effervescent tablets

The sodium content in effervescent tablets is often so high that it can be a health hazard for hypertension patients. The "Consumer" magazine of the Austrian consumer protection organization Verein für Konsumenteninformation (VKI) has now examined 20 medicines and six food supplements and found that the maximum daily dose was exceeded in six cases at maximum dosage, reports the APA news agency. Those affected should therefore prefer to take capsules or tablets

Not more than 1.5 grams of sodium a day

The American Heart Association (AHA) upper limit for an adult was used as the basis for the survey conducted in February and March. This recommends a daily amount of a maximum of 1.5 grams of sodium. The World Health Organization (WHO) calls the maximum dose two grams per day.

According to the information, the sodium in effervescent tablets comes from the added sodium carbonates, which ensure that the active ingredients dissolve more quickly in the water.

Daily maximum amount clearly exceeded

According to the agency report, the exceedance of the recommended intake in the test resulted from the fact that the maximum daily dose for adults was used. In the case of Alka Seltzer effervescent tablets, for example, this was a total of nine. With a single tablet one would be at 30 percent of the recommendation of 1.5 grams, with nine the daily maximum would be exceeded by 2.7 times.

Two Aspirin and Mexavit products as well as two Aspro Grippal were also exceeded. Pain relievers were generally high.

Hypertension patients should use other drugs

According to the magazine "Konsument", around 70 to 75 percent of the salt used, the main supplier of sodium, is in processed food or other products of the food industry in Europe. "As a result, we tend to consume too much table salt rather than too little sodium," says the magazine. The sheet therefore recommends hypertension patients to prefer capsules, tablets or liquid preparations in order to avoid further absorption of the alkali metal.

Lower blood pressure even without medication?

Can blood pressure be lowered without medication? 391 hypertension studies show that regular walking, swimming, cycling and simple weight training can have the same effects as beta blockers or ACE inhibitors. Most people, however, shy away from the movement and instead resort to the supposedly simpler medicines.

However, no patient should stop taking medication on their own. Because the same applies to sports as to tablets: only regularity can maintain protection. Of course, this method also has to constantly check blood pressure. (ad)
