This is how you can help the gut after taking antibiotics
Our gut microbiome (intestinal flora) consists of billions of useful bacteria. Numerous current researches make it increasingly clear that this microbiome plays a crucial role in human health. Antibiotics are used against numerous bacterial diseases. Broad-spectrum antibiotics in particular can effectively combat certain diseases, but at the same time the intestinal flora is also badly affected. Experts provide tips for the right nutrition to build up the intestinal flora after taking antibiotics.
It takes six months for our gut microbiome to recover from taking antibiotics. But even after the regeneration, clear traces can still be seen. This is the result of a current study by the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC), which was recently published in the journal "Nature Microbiology".
Why is the structure of our intestinal flora important?
The bacteria in the intestine serve the welfare of the host with a few pathogenic exceptions. On the one hand, they help digest food, produce vitamins and train the immune system. On the other hand, the residents of the intestine contribute to the protection against disease-causing companions. "If the microbiome gets out of balance, there is a risk of infectious diseases, obesity and diabetes as well as inflammatory and neurological diseases," reports Dr. Sofia Forslund of the MDC in a press release on the study results.
The intestinal flora does not fully recover from antibiotics
"We were able to show that the microbiome had almost completely recovered six months after taking the medication," said Forslund. However, the emphasis is on almost. The researchers were able to demonstrate for the first time that some sensitive types of bacteria have disappeared permanently.

“You should eat certain cereal products so that the bacteria can get and grow this fertilizer,” recommends Rolker. Cereal flakes and coarse-grained or finely ground whole-grain bread are particularly suitable. Wheat bran, fruit, nuts, vegetables, legumes, linseed and psyllium also have a positive effect on the intestinal flora.
These foods should be avoided
"In contrast, some foods should be avoided if the gut microbiome is weakened," adds antibiotic expert Lauprecht. Products with white flour and white sugar, such as white bread and sweets, as well as ready meals and fast food with artificially modified ingredients should be removed from the menu.
