Sulfur dioxide in unsulphured coconut flakes
As the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety and Kaufland Service GmbH & Co. KG announce, a coconut product sold by Kaufland is currently being recalled for reasons of preventive consumer protection. In routine checks, an increased content of sulfur dioxide (sulfite) was found in the "unsulfurized" coconut flakes.

Affected is the product "K-Classic grated coconut, finely grated, unsulphurised" in the 200 gram packaging of the manufacturer August Töpfer & Co. (GmbH & Co.) KG with the best before date November 15, 2019 and the EAN 4337185152634 as well as the batch number A: L33842. The sulfur dioxide contained is not declared on the label.

Where can I return the product?
According to Kaufland, the affected product was sold in the federal states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Saarland, Hesse and Rhineland Palatinate. The product can be returned to any Kaufland branch. The purchase price will also be reimbursed without presentation of the receipt.
Allergy sufferers in particular should take the recall seriously
Sulfites in food can cause allergic reactions. People with a food allergy or with a sulfite intolerance should not consume the grated coconut. "These customers are asked to pay attention to the recall and not to consume the product," warns the Federal Office of Consumer Protection in a press release.
Health risk from sulfites in allergies
Nausea, headache and low blood pressure are possible consequences if the coconut flakes are consumed in the presence of sulfite intolerance. "Customers who are not allergic to sulfite can safely consume this product," writes the manufacturer. (vb).
