Alcohol in pregnancy: the Minister of Health advises to consistently avoid it

Most people are aware that high alcohol consumption harms health. But even small amounts of alcohol can do harm - even to unborn children. Pregnant women should therefore consistently avoid alcoholic beverages.

Enjoy the Christmas days

Cookies, gingerbread, roasts: most people want to enjoy on the holidays. For many, this includes alcohol. But for expectant mothers, the consumption of alcoholic beverages should be taboo. Because alcohol consumption during pregnancy can have serious consequences. This is indicated by Bavaria's Minister of Health Melanie Huml in a communication.

Even a glass can be dangerous

Many people still don't realize that drinking alcohol has consequences for the unborn. Even some pregnant women are unaware of the alcohol taboo.

A survey showed that around 18 percent of Germans consider alcohol acceptable during pregnancy.

However, many children who were exposed to alcohol in the womb later suffered consequential damage. Even a glass is dangerous, warn health experts, as well as Bavaria's Minister of Health Melanie Huml.

Serious health consequences for the unborn

"Pregnant women should also consistently avoid alcohol at Christmas festivities or on New Year's Eve," said Huml, who is a licensed doctor.

“Because even a small amount of alcohol like a glass of sparkling wine can have serious health consequences for the unborn child. It is also important that pregnant women are supported by their family and friends or acquaintances. "

The consumption of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy can lead to malformations as well as developmental disorders and intellectual disabilities in the affected children.

Experts assume that around 4,000 children with the so-called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and 10,000 other children with different types of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are born in Germany every year.

In addition, a significant number of unreported cases can be assumed, especially in the case of lighter alcohol spectrum disorders.

Most common cause of congenital disability

"Too little is known that mother's alcohol consumption during pregnancy is the most common cause of congenital disability," said Huml.

"This affects the children throughout their lives - the damage and disabilities would be completely avoidable," said the Minister.

The awareness campaign “Pregnant? Zero Per Mille ”has summarized valuable information and tips for expectant mothers and their companions. (ad)
